MLK Day

The 3rd Monday of January is a US federal holiday… but why? 🤔👇🏾

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who is most well known for his work in the US Civil Rights movement, was born on January 15th. He was a father, a husband, a Baptist Reverend, a Doctor of Systematic Theology, a non-violent activity, an organizer, a striker, and a leader (to name just a few of the roles he filled).

But did you know…

He was arrested 29 times in his efforts to protest systematic injustice.

He received a Nobel Peace Prize at age 35 – making him the youngest person (at the time) to ever receive the award.

He delivered 2,500+ speeches in his lifetime, including the famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March of Washington in 1963.

When he was assassinated in 1968, over 100,000 people marched in his funeral procession, and in 1986, MLK Day became an official federal holiday.
